The Intriguing Function of the Endocrine System

The function of the endocrine system is to connect the outside to the inside.

First, let's look at the root of the word endocrine; endo means interior or inside and krinein means to separate. The function of the endocrine system is to...connect the outside of the body with the inside. Through hormones, from the Greek ‘hormon’, "that which sets in motion," the endocrine system connects the energy of sound, light and emotions through chemicals or hormones released directly into the blood stream. The chemicals directly affect our body’s functioning.

This means that the music we listen to, the colors we perceive, and the emotions we feel are actually transformed into chemicals and released into the blood stream to be distributed throughout the body. The outside world is not as separate from the inside as we like to think! The endocrine system when functioning optimally facilitates a positive connection between us and our surroundings.

Differences between the Human Nervous System and the Endocrine System

The nervous system and the endocrine system work side by side. The nervous system is more about fast impulses, sudden and abrupt changes and the fire element, i.e. sending or firing impulses to the nerves. The endocrine system is more about cyclical changes, slow and reoccurring, and has to do with the water element and the slow movement and nature of water.
